Are you tired of seeing different versions of Amish Sugar Cookies?? I’ll admit that I myself am nearly tapped out on the possible flavor variations. I’m not sick of Amish Sugar Cookies… NEVER. I don’t think I ever could be because they’re just an excellent, basic, staple cookie, and one of my favorite cookies ever, BUT, I’m at capacity on flavor combos, I believe.
After these Chocolate Amish Sugar Cookies, I have one more, and then I will stop for a good, long while, I swear.
About 2 weeks before Christmas, I had posted nearly everything I was going to have time to share, and I had no plans to create anything new. I wanted to bake just for the sake of baking.
Just to have Christmas cookies on hand without worrying about taking step-by-step progress photos or setting up an elaborate shoot of the finished product. I wanted to bake entirely separate from any blog projects.
The first batch of cookies I made? Amish Sugar Cookies, of course. I made a double batch, which I never do because a single batch itself makes about 60 cookies!! That’s a lot of cookies, and these were mostly just to have around for my S.O. and I. Alas, we had over 100.
In fact, when he needed a dish or dessert to take to the office Christmas party, he contemplated taking some of these Amish Sugar Cookies with Chocolate Frosting, and then affirmatively decided that he didn’t want to share them. Haha! We had dozens to spare, but he picked up a pie from Costco instead because he was reluctant to let go of any Amish Sugar Cookies.
I split up the double batch to make a number of flavor variations and to conduct a few experiments. One portion of dough was dedicated to these Chocolate Amish Sugar Cookies. I guess this wasn’t an “experiment” because I didn’t have much doubt about whether a soft, puffy, vanilla sugar cookie would be tasty with a creamy, fudgy chocolate frosting.
For another portion of dough, I attempted cutout cookies. This is a FAQ — many readers have asked if Amish Sugar Cookies would make good cutouts. The short answer is: no, unfortunately. I don’t recommend it overall. The long answer is that it can be done – they can be made into cutouts and delicious ones, at that, but I don’t suggest it. For more info, see here.
What I will say though is that I honestly did not like a chocolate cream cheese frosting with these. Cream cheese frosting is almost always my preference, including chocolate cream cheese frosting over regular chocolate frosting, but not in this case.
I personally had great preference for regular chocolate frosting when it came to frosting these cookies. Sometimes simpler is better, and that was true in the case of these Amish Sugar Cookies with Chocolate Frosting!
I feel like these would’ve been wonderful to share with you before Valentine’s Day — what an awesome V-Day treat these would be for a loved one! Oh, well… Chocolate Amish Sugar Cookies can definitely be enjoyed year-round!
Amish Sugar Cookies with Chocolate Frosting
Ingredients
For cookies:
- 1 cup butter softened
- 1 cup vegetable or canola oil
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2 large eggs at room temperature
- 2 tsp. vanilla
- 4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp. baking soda
- 1 tsp. cream of tartar
For chocolate frosting:
- 1 cup butter softened
- 3 1/2 - 4 cups powdered sugar
- 1/2 cup cocoa powder
- pinch salt
- 1/4 cup heavy cream or whole milk
- 2 tsp. vanilla extract
Instructions
For cookies:
- In a large mixing bowl, beat the butter, oil, and sugars until combined.
- Beat in eggs and vanilla.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, and cream of tartar.
- In two additions, add flour mixture to the butter mixture, beating until just combined. Do not overmix. Dough will be kinda fluffy and light!
- Line baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats.
- Drop dough by rounded teaspoonfuls onto baking sheets.
- Bake at 375 for 8-11 minutes, or until edges and bottoms are lightly browned.
- Remove to wire racks to cool.
For chocolate frosting:
- In a large mixing bowl, beat butter until creamy.
- Add 3 1/2 cups powdered sugar, cocoa powder, salt, heavy cream, and vanilla.
- Beat until smooth and creamy, 2-3 minutes. Frosting should be thick and creamy, spreadable, and not overly stiff, but it also shouldn't be runny or too easily lose its shape. If you have a different desired consistency, add additional powdered sugar to thicken, or additional heavy cream to thin.
- Spread a heaping tablespoonful onto each cookie. Allow to set.
